Official Pink Zune

Yes, that light pink rectangle you're looking at is an official shot of the Pink Zune, in all its magnenta-ish glory. We all knew it was coming -- and we've seen the rather more garish 100-unit hot pink Zune before -- so this isn't exactly the biggest news 'round these parts. No, if Microsoft really wanted to impress us, they'd take their minds off planning a targeted, 100,000 unit production run of pink cases and set their mind to really fixing the Zune. One of the fixes is sorta down already, but there's at least four more things that we think need to change in order for the social to get more members. Last time we checked, a Zune in a lighter shade of pink wasn't one of them, and neither was one in red.

Play Station 3 sales down 83%

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including GAME, Gamestation, Play.com, Asda and HMV.

A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent."

Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK.

"We publish the first week figures because there's such a clamour for them that we can't keep it a secret," said the spokesperson.

This week's software charts revealed that sales of the top two PlayStation 3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, had dropped by over 60 per cent.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe declined to comment.

Sony cuts price on PSP to $170

Sony Corp. said Tuesday it will lower the price of its PlayStation Portable gaming device by $30 to $170 amid intense competition among game console rivals, particularly Nintendo Co.

It's the first time Sony has officially lowered suggested retail prices on the PSP since its debut in March 2005. Video game publishers and financial analysts have been urging Sony to slash hardware prices in recent quarters.

The cuts come two months after Sony's gaming unit posted a third-quarter operating loss of $443 million, largely due to hefty costs for the launch of its PlayStation 3 video game console.

Although Sony promised business at the gaming unit would improve by the latter half of the fiscal year, the company said declining sales during the October-December period of Sony's predecessor console, PlayStation 2, as well as the handheld PlayStation Portable and PSP game software, hurt quarterly profits at the gaming unit.

Sony's PSP competes mainly against Nintendo's Game Boy and DS. Despite being launched in 2004, the DS -- which some retailers sell for as little as $130 -- outsold every other console in the United States in February, registering 485,000 units sold, according to market researcher NPD Group.

Nintendo has also been a formidable player in next-generation consoles, traditionally a Sony stronghold.

The Nintendo Wii, released in November, sold 335,000 units during the month, followed by Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 with 228,000 units and Sony's PlayStation 3 with 127,000 units.

With its diminutive "Wiimote" -- a motion-sensitive, wrist-mounted remote control -- Nintendo's Wii has been a surprise hit among kids, women and older players, catching on far beyond the "hardcore" gamer niche of young men. The Wii sells for $250, far less than the PS3, which starts at $500.

Jack Tretton, president and chief executive of Foster City-based Sony Computer Entertainment America, said Sony's price cuts were an effort to make the game more affordable to young gamers.

"We have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend," Tretton said in a statement.

Sony, which also lowered the price of its higher-end PSP Entertainment Pack 20 percent to $200, will launch a print and online advertising campaign targeted at teenagers.

In late November, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. slashed prices on the PSP to $170. Although world's largest retailer didn't release sales numbers, analysts said the promotion was a success, and they were encouraged about Sony's official new prices.

"We expect a modest step-up in PSP unit sales during an otherwise seasonally slower period for the video game industry," Colin Sebastian, senior research analyst at Lazard Capital Markets in San Francisco, wrote in an investor note.

Kareena's sexy new song

Kareena Kapoor

After the Yeh Mera Dil cameo in Don, Kareena Kapoor will make a special appearance in the song Yaara Kabhi Ishq To Karo in the forthcoming film, Kya Love Story Hai.
The film stars Tusshar Kapoor and Ayesha Takia, and has been directed by Lovely Singh.

The music has been composed by Pritam, and the film is scheduled for an April 20 release.
Kareena looks gorgeous in the song, and, not surprisingly, it is one of the film's highlights.

Nokia N99

The Nokia N99 concept phone eats my mind with its
too-good-to-be-real features. After all, an 8 megapixel camera in a cellphone sounds delicious. But there is lots more — like 3.2 inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio decorated the front part of the phone. It also has an in-built GPS navigation option. Other features of this monster mobile include Wi-Fi, audio/video codec support (MP3, DivX, XviD, MPEG, and AVI). It has a 16GB internal flash memory and a miniSD slot for additional storage.

Can’t take my eyes from you, N99.

Features:

9 way front joystick button, 16GB FLASH internal memory, up to 4GB mini SD slot, 16:9 3.2″ wide screen, GPS, MP3, DIVX XVID MPEG AVI video reading, WLAN WIFI, qwerty pad, 8MP camera, 3CCD 720 pixel wide 30fps video capture.

Now, if these specs would be true, I think Nokia N99 would be the first NSeries cellphone to truly justify the name of “multimedia computer”. But judging from the number (N99), it will be some time until this beauty comes out. We should see Nseries N97 yet.

Agloco - Own the internet

There are tons of social networking sites. My personal favourite is Orkut. But Agloco is somewhat different and takes the concept of revenue sharing. It is promising to share the income they get with you. It is not fully functional yet as it is still in Beta (what a surprise), so all you have to do is sign-up for now. I'm guessing the earlier you sign up the better it is, because once it gets more popular most of your friends would have already signed up. We will see how it turns out in the near future.

WiFi in the Sky

Leaders and innovators in the airline industry are recognizing the value of broadband in-flight. The ability to connect to email, internet and VPN in the air -- at a cost similar to a ground-based hotspot -- provides a customer experience never before possible. It is a productivity enhancer that attracts and retains high-valued business travelers, improving an airline’s onboard mix. As a revenue-generating service, AirCell broadband provides a significant revenue stream, further contributing to an airline’s financial success.

Dramatically different from satellite-based services, AirCell broadband is significantly lighter, smaller and more cost-effective than anything that has come before. Already demonstrated aboard a commercial aircraft and scheduled for launch in early 2008, AirCell broadband will allow passengers to use their own 802.11-equipped devices such as laptops, PDAs, phones and BlackBerry® units in flight, for data communications in a fully integrated wireless cabin environment. Incorporating standardized equipment, proven EVDO technology and a reliable, affordable air-to-ground link, AirCell’s broadband installation and operating costs will be a fraction of satellite systems’.

The air-to-ground link is also available to the airline for crew and operational applications that can enable new initiatives, provide productivity benefits, and produce significant cost savings. In addition, crew voice communications through a handset in the flight deck and a cabin phone for flight attendants will support such things as emergency medical communications and contact with airline maintenance and dispatch. The sky is truly the limit when it comes to airline operational uses for the AirCell broadband system.

SRK Madame Tussauds

London: On Tuesday, superstar Shah Rukh Khan finally met his match. With a desi twist of Bhangra music, a garland and wife Gauri in tow, he unveiled his wax statue at Madame Tussauds in London.

The 41-year old actor is the third Bollywood star, after Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai to get waxed. So following Bachchan again?

“I don’t want to sound pompous and self-centred but I came from Delhi and in the last 18 years I have come a long way. Please don't take it away from me,” said Shah Rukh.

Amongst all the reasons in the world, Shah Rukh seems to like his mother’s reasons for him being at Madame Tussauds the best.

“Like all mums, my mum felt I would be in Madame Tussauds one day, she thought I was very good looking, and she thought that was enough criteria to be here,” he said.

But did he ask the makers to hide his flaws? “I wanted all my flaws included otherwise it would be too sweet and too nice,” clarified Shah Rukh.

The actor seemed genuinely overwhelmed and even got a little philosophical.

“We say it in India that in movies and Bollywood films, it’s a happy ending. And if it's not happy it's not the end. I'm feeling a little scared because this is very happy; so does it also mean the end? And do I feel that I need to do something more? Should I just retire?" he asked.

He had the right mix of humility and pride and wife Gauri certainly approved and quite literally couldn’t keep her hands off him.

“She said it's been a long time since i've seen you look so young and you were only smiling for a change and not being grouchy and answering back,” said Shah Rukh.

So if you want to get up, close and personal with the King Khan himself then this is as real as it gets. He's not leaving Madame Tussuads anytime soon.
